The YETI Skala 32L Hiking Pack is purpose-built for long day hikes, summit pushes, and everything from quick trail loops to full-day adventures. At 32 liters, it sits in that ideal range for carrying everything you realistically need for a full day outside — without stepping into multi-day backpacking territory.

First Impressions

I was genuinely excited to try YETI’s take on a technical hiking pack. My first impressions were strong — it feels well-built, thoughtfully designed, and ready for real use. It’s a bit larger than the daypack I’ve been using, but the hip belt is comfortable and helps the weight sit well. I don’t anticipate the added capacity being an issue — if anything, it gives me more flexibility for longer days and extra layers. I’m looking forward to putting more miles on it.

Below is a detailed look at the features that define this pack.

32 Liters of Functional Capacity

Thirty-two liters gives you room for:

  • Extra insulating layers

  • Rain protection

  • Full-day food supply

  • Ample water

  • Emergency gear

  • Camera or journaling essentials

It’s large enough for shoulder-season hikes — the transitional months between summer and winter when bulkier layers are often required — yet streamlined enough to avoid feeling oversized.

If you like the Skala platform but need a different capacity, YETI offers it in 32L, 40L, 50L, and 60L sizes.

The 32L and 40L versions are designed for day hikes and shorter trips where you still want solid structure, easy access, and durable materials.

The 50L and 60L models move into true multi-day territory, giving you the extra space needed for bulkier gear and extended outings.

RipZip Wide-Access Opening

One of the defining features of the Skala is YETI’s RipZip access system.

Instead of a traditional top-only opening, the RipZip allows the front panel to open wide — giving you near full visibility into the main compartment.

Why this matters:

  • Faster access to layers

  • Easier gear organization

  • Less digging at the bottom of the pack

  • Better visibility during transitions

Frame & Load Support System

The Skala Hiking Pack includes an aluminum frame, providing structure and stability.

Combined with:

  • Adjustable shoulder harness

  • Load lifters

  • Sternum strap

  • Stabilizing hip belt

These features are designed to:

  • Distribute weight evenly

  • Reduce shoulder fatigue

  • Improve stability on uneven terrain

  • Keep the pack balanced when fully loaded

Ventilated Back Panel

The Skala Hiking Pack features a ventilated mesh back panel engineered to promote airflow.

While no pack eliminates sweat during exertion, airflow channels help reduce heat buildup — particularly useful on sustained climbs or warmer days.

Durable Guardcore™ Nylon Shell

True to YETI’s reputation, the Skala is constructed with a rugged, abrasion-resistant nylon shell.

This material should help handle things like:

  • Brush and rock contact

  • Dirt and dust exposure

  • Repeated loading and unloading

  • Trail wear over time

The fabric is also water-resistant, helping shed light rain and moisture. While it’s not a fully waterproof pack, it offers protection in variable conditions.

This pack leans toward durability rather than ultralight minimalism.

Hydration Compatibility & External Storage

The Skala is hydration-reservoir compatible, giving you flexibility for hands-free hydration.

It also includes:

  • Stretch side pockets for water bottles

  • External attachment points

  • Accessible storage for frequently used items

Fit & Adjustability

Fit plays a major role in comfort.

With shoulder straps, load lifters, sternum strap, and hip belt working together, the pack can be dialed in for balance and support. The Skala also allows for adjustments depending on torso length.

There are men’s and women’s versions of this pack for a more tailored fit.

Considerations

No pack is perfect for every scenario. The Skala 32L prioritizes durability and structure over ultralight minimalism. For substantial day hikes, those tradeoffs make sense. For shorter, lighter outings, it may be more pack than necessary.

Conclusion

The YETI Skala 32L Hiking Pack feels designed for big days outside — where structure, accessibility, and durability matter more than cutting every ounce. It has a reassuring, solid feel and includes enough thoughtful features to organize and carry your adventure gear confidently.
